Chuwi Hi8 Review – Should You Buy It?

Chuwi Hi8, Chuwi Hi8 Review, Chuwi

Produced by a less known company, Chuwi Hi8 is an interesting tablet equipped with an IPS 8˝ screen and dual-boot configuration with two operating systems, users can choose between an authentic experience of Google Android and Windows 10 with access to PC applications.

Chuwi Hi8 is presented in a white housing, coated with a textured pattern that gives the impression of smoothness, providing good grip and masking fingerprints. For added design, the sides of the tablet screen are decorated with polished metal bands.

The tablet is assigned on the entry-level range, Chuwi Hi8 puts less emphasis on finishing and more on hardware. Thus, in its flexible case hides a configuration with Intel Atom processor Z3736F Bay Trail-T family, built using 22nm manufacturing and equipped with 4 cores x86 64-bit, capable to reach a frequency of 2.16 GHz up to Turbo mode. The configuration is completed with 2GB DDR3 RAM, 32GB internal memory and microSD expansion slot (up to 64GB). The centerpiece, however, is 8˝ screen with IPS technology and 283 PPI density corresponding to 1920x1200 pixels resolution.

Complementing the list of specifications, Chuwi Hi8 offers a front camera with VGA resolution and another one with 2 MP, the Home key capacitive type (operates under both Windows and Android), microphone and mono speaker in the back, micro USB 2.0 OTG functionality (USB adapter included in the package-size accessories) connector and headphone Power/Volume buttons. On the connectivity side supports Wireless N and Bluetooth. Important equipment missing from the list is only the GPS receiver.

Weighing just 304 grams and thinner than 1 cm, Chuwi Hi8 tablet is supple and very pleasant to handle. Unfortunately this advantage is offset by the battery capacity of 4000 mAh that promises no more than 5 hours of video playback.

Performance and Usability

For the market in China, Chuwi Hi8 unfortunately comes without European plug adapter, but it can be purchased separately from shops everywhere. Passing over this impediment, the first contact left a good impression by working with a thin and light tablet, but also through the illuminated screen 8˝ with generous viewing angles and clear solutions to the Retina Display iPad Mini tablets used Apple. Capacitive multitouch interface is accurate and responds very well to applied commands.

Even if the screen is not good enough, mono speaker provided on the back of the case offers sufficient volume and clear enough sound. Instead, the use of a tablet with headset yielded good results, confirming the amplification stages used in the tablet construction is of good quality.

Android Experience

Turned to Android 4.4.4 operating system, Chuwi Hi8 immediately demonstrates its Asian origins, presenting Android menus translated into Chinese. Fortunately the edition of Android without changes to the interface is easy to navigate for anyone familiar with this OS. To complete the transformation, we recommend and removal or disabling of pre-installed apps by the manufacturer, most of them are useless anyway without knowing the Chinese language. Finally, we have an Android tablet completely free of bloatware, with only a minimal set of Google applications installed and access to the Play Store.

Like on Windows, Android system reserved partition is not very generous, giving only 6.67 GB for installing additional applications. Even if this is not a problem for common applications, rapid games installation will deplete the available space.

Chuwi Hi8 delivers a good level of performance and features unparalleled entry-level tablets offered by manufacturers consecrated to the price under $100: IPS screen with high resolution, fast processor and enough RAM or two operating systems - Android and Windows the latter comes with the package Office 365 account and 1TB One Drive available for one year.
